Most schools have a set of rules that the student body needs to abide by, for obvious reasons. These rules are there to keep the student body in order, as well as to keep them safe and also with the right mindset. For example, some rules that our school has is that we must not vandalize or degrade others or their property. The reason for this rule is a given, as the school is not our property, and other's must be respected. School rules are important. However, just because there are rules, doesnt mean that the school can catch all violations or violators for misconduct. Here is where we need to take ownership for our own actions, and catch ourselves when we find ourself going against the rules. One example of when I was violating the rules is when I was drawing on the desks in ms harmons room. I would mindlessly doodle on the desks, practicing my signature, and would draw things like animals. However, when I found out halfway through the school year that it was a violation to do so, I started to try to break the habit. I began to make a habit to erase if I accidentally drew on the desk. Another thing that I have taken ownership for is when I became a member of student council. Because I am a representative of the whole student body, I have become more aware of the need to be responsible for my actions. I have cleaned up my language, support the HUSKIES and of course, learned to enjoy and look forward to coming to HIS! I hope that I can be a good example to the rest of the student body by hopefully maintaining a good representative image!! The pictures above show the HUSKIES, which I am lilving by, and the one on the right is me, giving a speech for student council.

I am going to do an experiment here. I would like to see how much I can grow over the course of an year. I will do a reflection of me reflecting on a husky.
October 6, 2017 Throughout this HUSKY portfolio, I would like to make it unique, and special, not normal, average or simply fulfilling standards just to get the grade. I will pour my heart into this portfolio, filling it with all my experiences that shape my high school life. Simply fulfilling requirements does not appeal to me, and I cannot love something unless I make it my own. So I will tell my HUSKY portfolio in a flowing story, a collection of short stories and philosophies that will not only fulfill the HUSKY requirements but hopefully encourage you, the reader to start something of your own. So I will start my HUSKY portfolio, on this day, October 6th, my 16th birthday. Throughout this portfolio, I will compare myself to many things, such as a little ship on a deep dark ocean symbolizing the world, or a bee in a forest surrounded by large trees symbolizing obstacles. This is an example of what I will do throughout the HUSKIES. This is my Self-Reflection. - Entry 1 - October 6, 2017 - My Self Management Philosophy - S10 - Self Reflection I am currently 16 years old, and in my 16 years on this world, I have learned, experienced, gained and lost many things. These events are like an ocean wave, with crests of happiness followed by a plunge of sadness, again followed by a rise of happiness, than a plunge, repeating and never ending. I think of myself as a small ship on a big, wide and chaotic ocean on top of these waves, with occasional storms battering my sails. The world scared me. I started to research how other people managed themselves in these times of trials and hardships, and yet managed to survive and become successful. After searching for a couple weeks, I realized one common quality that most successful people had. That quality is Self-Management. I researched this quality further and joined boy scouts, made my own calendar, started a diary, bought a planner with my hard earned money, went to church and put my planning and preparation to the test at school. At first I was floating, surviving the storms but then after winter break in my 8th grade year, I sank. After 8th grade, I came to Japan. I started to attend HIS. Again the waves were large and I sank again, as the first few months were horrible. However, after the first few months, I set down my anchor on something different. I placed it on myself. I pointed my rudder towards the future, towards graduating from HIS with good grades and ultimately, Brigham Young University. My dream school. I then opened my sails, taking advantage of every opportunity, cleaning the deck of any contamination and stains. But the most important part of the ship, is the navigator, the captain. The manager of all things that happen on the ship, and the only way a ship can survive through a storm. This captain is me, the actual brain behind all of the experiences, and the one who makes decisions and sets rules. On this day, October 6th, 2017, As the captain of my ship, I present my self management philosophy which is this. 1.)Keep Moving Forward 2.)Live the Boyscout law and oath 3.)Never compromise my standards for someone else 4.)Do what is right 5.)Stay afloat, and don't let anything sink me
Septermber 10th, 2018. One year after above entry. Ok, So the date is now September 10th, 2018, Almost one year after I wrote the above entry. I find it so freaking cringy I am so embarrased of my past. But this signifies growth. By reflecting on the part of this husky that I wrote last year, I was able to see how much I had grown over the period of an year. A year from now, I will probably feel the same. By seeing the negative aspects of myself last year, I hope that I have improved them. Its an interesting and recurring process. Self Reflection is important, which is why I keep a diary, manage my life and look back at my past experiences. This is a unique entry of HUSKIES, as it is its own artifact. This Husky took one year to complete, as I wrote a part of this Husky one year, then reflected on that reflection a year later. The above pictures are pictures of me when I was a kid. I self reflect when I see those pictures. Was I really that short? It was nice to see how Ive grown in height, and also hopefully, maturity. • My Self Management Philosophy - manage their lives with integrity (H1) ”You don’t need to meditate for hours and hours to attain inner peace and enlightenment. You need only SEE, FEEL, and ACT from the heart.” - Kung Fu Panda. Through the years, I find this quote actually taking a large part in my daily life. I now know who I am, and I know that to be truly peaceful and in control, I need to be myself, and let my heart pour into everything I do, to give it a touch of Tadashi. This is why, everything I do, I like to leave a bit of myself on. Here, I will compare myself to a car. All the parts working together as one, to transport the humans and cargo within its body from a location to a destination. All the gears, pistons and mechanics work together to function as a vehicle. If one gear stops working, the rest of the mechanism stops functioning. The driver needs to be aware and consious of what is happening within the car, and give it normal checkups and tuning. This is an important key to maintaining a healthy car. The reason why I am comparing myself to a car is that a car needs to be managed. If the car is not regularly checked up on or maintained, it will deteriorate and become useless. Management of a car system is very important, just like it is important to manage yourself. In life, similar to the car, consciousness of what is right and what is wrong is very important. If one’s views on what is right are skewed, they end up doing bad things without fully realizing that they are violating a law. This is because they are not managing their actions and self correctly. For some, morality is compromised. They completely ditch morality for popularity, selfish purposes or the desire to get what they want. The world is filled with broken cars, people who do not manage themselves. If the whole population of the world does this, society is corrupt. If the whole population keeps and makes moral choices, the world is basically a utopia, a world full of luxury cars, oiled and smoothly running. Each driver is fully aware of their car and keeps their chassis clean and free of any dirt that offends its purity. For me, I love to keep my tabs on everything from social business to how clean my room is, updated. I do not like it when I do not have a clear view of what is going on around me. In order to do that, I learned over the years, to obey my parents and to keep my own standards and beliefs. In order to do so, I self reflect and think about what I am doing. I am managing myself, just like maintaining a car. In order to maintain myself as good in my own eyes, I must be honest with myself. I do not like lying to myself as that messes things up. For example, let me say that I told a lie. And this lie was big, and required me to keep adding more lies on top of the big lie. Eventually from a design-minded point of view, the lies look like a tree. Based around the trunk, lies branch off of the trunk becoming larger with each lie that is told. Eventually, the branches get too heavy and the tree will fall. I am sure that everyone has had at least one of these “trees” in their lifetime. I have had a couple myself. I look back and although I have violated my standards, the best step to take would have been confessing my lie, cutting the tree trunk and making it a stump, instead of lying even more and nurturing that dark tree. This is the result of bad self management. By analyzing this lie scenario, I realized that telling a lie is a short term “solution” to a problem, and will eventually make things worse. It is better to tell the truth and get short term pain. In the long run, that truth will help. This will allow me as the driver to keep control of my car. I add this to my list of virtues. Always be Honest. Part of my self management philosophy is to obey the Boy Scout law and to do what is right. Part of the Boy Scout law states to be trustworthy, and that is a tenet that I especially focus on in my life, along with doing what is right. This part of me was further strengthened through this experience. I told a big lie when I came to HIS. Although it didn't really bother others, it bothered me. I had gone against my own conscience and my standards and that bothered me to the point of sadness and self guilt. I felt OCD and worried that other people might find out about my lie. I told more lies to cover it up. I eventually confessed and started with a clean slate, but for a while I experienced silence from my friends and I felt guilty. I wished I had not told that lie. Although I do not have any pictures of me lying or lying, (lol) I do have this self analysis on lying. You are reading it right now. Here is an example of me managing myself with integrity. On the first day of this school year, 10th grade, a fellow classmate and I went to 7-11 during lunch to buy our lunch. This was right after an assembly on being a good student and keeping the rules, and I had violated that rule already, within an hour of that assembly. I will not say the students name, but we thought that we had made it back safely without getting caught. However, Mr Cooke called us and told us to talk to him after school. I went through the rest of the day thinking of a possible lie I could tell that was partly true, but when I went to his office, I looked back and realized that I did not want to lie. Mr Cooke is an adult, and obviously knows that I know what I did was wrong, so I told the truth. He was understanding, but mad, which he had every right to be. He told me not to do that again, and I have not. I am proud to say that that experience, though I did something bad, has stuck with me as a day in which I placed truth over self-protection. (hence the 7-11 picture on the right.) Managing my life is the key to living a happy life, at least in my case. Being not only a law abiding citizen, but also one that can be trusted, loved and turned to when things go wrong for someone else is the best thing one can wish for. This can be achieved by thinking things through. This is the importance of integrity. My Goal is to be honest and trustworthy in my life and to manage myself correctly, just like maintaining a car. If all things I do are good, everything can run smoothly. A goal that I have in mind is to not cheat during any test during the rest of my educational future. Another example of managing a life of integrity can be found in the everyday process of keeping promises. When you make a promise, you usually specify a time that you will fulfill that promise by. The watch on my wrist in the left picture and in the middle is a watch that I use to keep my promises on time. Time is a valuable thing, not only to me but to others as well. By keeping my promises on time, I am trying to be a good person with integrity. (S28) I pursue physical and mental health Everyone has those days when they are down and sad and need a spark of happiness. That happened to me quite alot. I had bad mental health during my freshman year. This resulted in me having anxiety and stress which resulted in mental unhealthiness, resulting in a lack of concentration, health and emotionality. I realised that this had to change. Four days ago, I was full of anxiety, depression and sadness and just needed to be alone and take my mind off of things. I live north of Sapporo station, and I love exploring. So I went exploring to take my mind off of things since that is what I love to do. I went with a couple of my friends to Nishi 28 and dropped them off, and then I walked through the pouring rain, 10 kilometers back to my home. I came home happier and more mentally stable. I listened to happy music, took photos, went on a date with my umbrella and danced. Lol so sad, but that is what I needed at the moment xD. Above are the photos I took in order to calm myself down. The photo of the building looked really beautiful to me when I took it and made me feel happy. The TV tower is a landmark that I always look to, so I took a picture of that as well. But the picture of the moon is my favorite. It helped me reflect on how small our problems actually are, seeing how small we are compared to the moon. By going home in the rain (running) I was able to manage my own mental health, all while also pursuing my physical health. This helped me calm down and work things out. Next time, when I am down, I will go out and just take out my sadness and anger by using my body and running my heart out. I will do my best to push myself so that I can forget what I am worrying about. Life is hard, but life is good and it is short. I can make life good if I try to. I will smile I will be a light to others. This date with myself helped me get ahold of my mental health, all while also allowing me to get physically healthy. This is personally very important to me, as I love going outdoors. I encourage everybody to do the same, and do something they love when something goes wrong. I am interested and am curious in the world around me - (K13)
People who do nothing gain nothing. Those who make the effort to learn or experience new things gain more knowledge. A way that one can gain more knowledge about the world is to be interested and curious about the world around them. Consider the following example of two people who go camping. One hates the bugs, the rain, the pollen, the weather, the dust, the tent and everything uncomfortable that comes his way. The other person admires the beauty in everything around her -- the intricate anthills, the sound of the rain, the flowers, the clouds covering the sun, all creating a picture perfect situation -- and takes on the challenge of setting up a tent with enthusiasm. From this we see the different things that these two take away. The person who only sees the negative side takes away a horrible experience, one that he will never go on again, because all he remembers is the horrible experience that he encountered on his trip. The other person however, takes away a great experience, because she enjoyed her trip, and would be more than willing to go again. I went on a couple camping trips in Hokkaido during the summer break. I grew up camping, in places ranging from the middle of the Rocky Mountains of Utah, to the red desert of southern Utah, but what I have learned is that, each camping trip is a new experience. On this particular camping trip, I went to Akabira, which is about two hours north of Sapporo. I experienced many firsts on this camping trip. I saw huge flies, slept in a tent without a floor, went exploring in the forest at 3 in the morning, saw my first frog and made fire by rubbing a stick against a log. I found my backpack infested with ants on the third day. However, during this camping trip, I enjoyed every bit of it. Because I met each experience with optimism and curiosity, I was able to make a potentially bad camping trips into a new and interesting experience. I could have stayed inside my tent avoiding the huge flies, I could have called my parents to go home, and I could have complained my way through the camp, but I chose to make it fun and memorable. I chose to have fun even when the conditions were not the best. I had fun by making new memories with my friends. Through this, I was able to strengthen the idea that I had that it is important to try new things to experience what things are like. The pictures above are all pictures taken during the camping trip. Each shows me having fun and experiencing something new, a water balloon to the face, lighting a stick on fire while its in my mouth, and hanging out with my new friends. Through these moments, I was able to make unforgettable memories. This husky may be one of my favorites, as exploring new things is something I truly love doing. I found out through this camping trip that to truly make lasting memories, I have to be interested in what I am doing. I will make sure that I have a purpose of doing things, and I will do that by doing my best to make each challenge a good memory. I use multiple resources for research Knowledgeable Thinkers - (K16)
In order for a student to effectively survive through school, they need to learn to use the resources that they have, effectively. In other words, to effectively learn to use the internet. The internet is a beautiful tool if used correctly. It can help check your equations, educate us with videos such as Crash Course World History, help with vocabulary, give definitions to an unknown word and most importantly, offers great amounts of knowledge. Some of the websites that I use to effectively learn new things is through essential websites and applications such as Google Docs, Quizlet, Wolfram Alpha, Khan Academy and Evernote. These tools help me be organized, learn more about a field of potential intrest and helps me in places that I do not understand. One of the biggest problems that I encounter is citations. APA format and MLA format always confuse me. However, I know that it is very important to give credit properly where credit is due, so in order to cite correctly, I use https://owl.english.purdue.edu/ to make sure I am citing correctly. This website teaches clueless students like me, how to properly use MLA/APA citations and in-text citations without fear of being misunderstood for incorrect citations. Right now, I am using weebly. It is a great platform that allows anyone to create a proffesional looking website. I used google to get to this website. Google is another tool that I use daily. One important thing that the web can be used for is to fact check things to make sure information that you take in is accurate. For example, I can make sure that the information that I have on hand corroborates with that of experts, and other scholary papers or websites that offer accurate information. In a world where fake news is starting to have(or already might) taken an effect on people, it is important to make sure information is factually accurate. This is why it is important to not rely on one sole website, but multiple, to make sure that you get the whole picture, or all the information as needed. The above websites are examples of websites that I use to gather information, or to check the information that I have on hand, to see if it is factually correct. |
